hi all

this is one of the best docos i have seen on utube that looks at scientific research around the globe which points to the possibility of human consciousness surviving beyond physical death. there are quite a few indepth NDE accounts.

incredibly interesting.
note it is in 6 parts and the other parts can be found on the right side of the screen.

Thanks for that Spaceghost, I for one am itching to watch it.  I will have to wait until early January as I am on the cusp of losing my internet speed ... yes school holidays are upon us and suddenly my monthly allocation seems to have been eaten up 9 days early!!! Grrrr.

This topic really interests me as I have chatted to a handful of people about their NDE experiences.  A couple have reported the often typical processes of loved ones, light etc whereas others have told me they experienced nothing at all.

Yay I finally managed to sit and watch it :)

What a fantastic documentary and very balanced.  I am glad to see Dr Blackmore put words in like "I believe" "I suggest" not that this is proven beyond doubt just to be just the functions of the brain dying.

The case of the lady with the blood clot in the base of the skull was very interesting in that many people seem to describe seeing things in the operating theatre that surely would be impossible for them to see?  The seeing part is the intriguing part in these cases to me personally.

What are your thoughts on this? :)

i am going to have to re- watch it to note specific details, but i always admired dr. blackmore.

i came across her studies when i was a uni researching into the topic and she has always presented a balanced physiological view point as an explanation of NDES. at one time she did state that the tunnel experience may be related to memories of the being birthed and coming through the birthing channel (ironic to some degree, as a transition can be viewed as a second birth), but this was negated by other NDE researchers who pointed out that people who were delivered by C sections also underwent NDEs.

in addition, it does not explain, when having an OBE, a person can cross over thousands of miles,  view and recall what loved ones were doing at the time of their death and have it verified by said relatives. and as you pointed out, give sight descriptions of the surgery when the individual is anesthetized and many times have their eye lids taped down.

it should also be noted that pre-school children have 1) been met by siblings who may have died from an accident or been delivered still born, yet their parents have never brought these siblings up in conversations, and yet the child who had an NDE has been able to state the childs name and character traits unique to the child that has died. 2) pre-school children who have been interviewed near the time of their NDEs, then, interviewed years later have not altered their accounts in anyway. this is interesting to note, as the cognitive abilities/recall of that child would not have been developed enough to recall NDE instances blow by blow and not change aspects of the story.

this was noted by elizabeth kubler-ross who is one of the most noted psychiatrist of the last century and, who in her memoirs, recalls being visited by a patient of hers - 6months after she has been at the patients funeral and seen her buried. i will post that account up in a bit.

hallucinations as as explanation to the NDE have also been questioned in light of deep psychological changes reported by people who have had an NDE. studies have shown that hallucinations, in and of themselves, do not induce long term character and lifestyle changes. those who have undergone a NDE do, with dramatic changes in lifestyle, religious/spiritual beliefs, materialistic povs and, across the board, a reduction in- or complete elimination in- the fear of death. these changes are life long standing. hallucinations do not  elicit such changes.

what i was particularly excited about was the research in regards to quantum physics and the brain....but i am going to have to review, because i found the researchers statements quite mind blowing.

all in all, i this it is one of the best NDE documentaries i have seen. anything that presents balanced povs, and back it up with research, is good viewing.

here is the account of the prestigious psychiatrist dr. elizabeth kubler- ross having a visitation by a former patient, mrs schwartz, who passed away months earlier. dr ross was fully awake when the visitation occurred.

it should be noted that dr.ross was a extraordinarily prominent physician in her field. she is the one who put forth the "5 stages of grieving". the ramifications of stating that you had seen a ghost would have undoubtedly tarnished her reputation, but she believed in truth and displayed the courage of her convictions by writing  her experience in her memoirs "wheel of life".

just have a look at her accreditation:

there are so many letters after her name that the alphabet became anemic. :D

Alison i think this would be a brilliant account to place upon the FB paranormal site.

In her book, On Life After Death, Dr. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, a pioneer in the study of the near-death experience (NDE), states that her first account of an NDE came from “a certain Mrs. Schwartz.” After being declared dead following 45 minutes of resuscitation attempts, Mrs. Schwartz began to show signs of life and was revived. She lived for another year-and-a-half, during which time she met Dr. Ross and related her experience during a seminar on death and dying at the University of Chicago.

Some 10 months after Mrs. Schwartz’s death, Dr. Ross decided to discontinue the death and dying seminar. After giving her lecture on death and dying in a classroom, she was discussing shutting down the seminar with a minister who had worked with her in the program. As they approached an elevator, where the minister would leave her, Ross noticed a woman standing in front of the elevator. The woman looked familiar, but Ross could not immediately place her. As soon as the minister got on the elevator, the woman, who Ross described as being somewhat transparent, approached her and asked her if she could accompany her to her office. Dr. Ross came to realize that it was Mrs. Schwartz and began to question her own awareness.

“This was the longest walk of my life,” Ross related. “I am a psychiatrist. I work with schizophrenic patients all the time, and I love them. When they would have visual hallucinations I would tell them.” She told herself that she was seeing Mrs. Schwartz but that it couldn’t be. She did a reality check on herself and wondered if she had seen too many schizophrenic patients and was beginning to see things herself.

“I even touched her skin to see if it was cold or warm, or if the skin would disappear when I touched it. It was the most incredible walk I have ever taken, not knowing why I was doing what I was doing. I was both an observing psychiatrist and a patient.”

When they reached Ross’ office door, Mrs. Schwartz opened it and told Ross that she had come back for two reasons, first to thank her and the Reverend Gaines, a former minister in the program, for the help they had given her, and, secondly, to ask her not to stop her work on death and dying.

Ross got to her desk and did another reality check, touching her desk, chair, and a pen. “I was hoping she would disappear,” Ross continues the story. “But she didn’t. She just stood there and lovingly said, ‘Dr. Ross, did you hear me? Your work is not finished. We will help you and you will know when the time is right, but do not stop now. Promise?’”

As a further test of her awareness or sanity, Ross asked the woman if she would write a note to Reverend Gaines. Mrs. Schwartz complied. She then got up from her chair, and said, “Dr. Ross, you promise,” to which Ross replied, “I promise.” With that Mrs. Schwartz disappeared.

Ross kept the note and later told the story to many friends and associates. She considered having fingerprint and handwriting experts examine the note to see if they matched up with the fingerprints and handwriting of Mrs. Schwartz, but she never got around to it and eventually gave the note to the Rev. Renford Gaines. Researcher Boyce Batey later contacted Gaines, who had changed his name to Mwalimu Imara, in line with his African heritage, at the Boston Center for Religion and Psychotherapy, Inc. Imara informed Batey that because of various confidentiality concerns relative to Mrs. Schwartz and her family, he could not provide a copy of the note. However, he provided Batey with the exact wording, viz. “Hello there, Dropped in to see Dr. Ross. One of two on the top of my ‘list’. You being the other. I’ll never find or know anyone to take the place of you two. I want you to know, as I’ve told her, I’m at peace at home now. I want you to know you helped me. The simple Thank you is not enough. But please know how much I mean it. Thank you again. Mary Schwartz.”

At the time, Dr. Ross was still very much the skeptic when it came to such things. “I didn’t believe in all that stuff,” she expresses her attitude at the time of the encounter with Mrs. Schwartz.

Needless to say, Dr. Kübler-Ross would continue her work with the dying and would come to believe in a spirit world, becoming one of the world’s foremost authorities on death and dying.

“Death is simply a shedding of the physical body like the butterfly shedding its cocoon,” she wrote. “It is a transition to a higher state of consciousness where you continue to perceive, to understand, to laugh, and to be able to grow.”
