That's the ticket, it sounds like it was a fantastic night for all.
I can still remember some great camps that I went on as a lad over 30 years ago and I still have some fond memories even now, as I imagine Dayton does. And what a place to have a sleep over, pity it's no longer an option for people.

Thanks for sharing the experience with us, and also for giving the reader a peek into the history of the “old girl”, especially for some people that haven't made it down there yet. Doesn't Glen Valance sound like a top bloke?

You know Anna, I really wasn't going to dob to Alison.

I have been reading up on a bit of the history of the Adelaide Gaol since discovering this site the other day, and would be interested in obtaining a few books relating to it.

Such an interesting topic ! (And being an Adelaidian, I thought it would be good to brush up on some Adelaide's history too)

Can anyone recommend any good books ? - and is the Gaol shop the best place to purchase them ?

I remember reading a review of the book by Allan Peters "Dead Woman Walking" - the Elizabeth Woolcock story, so I will put that one on my list. I see that Anna has mentioned that there was a book written by Glen Valance, so that sounds like a good one too ...

I discovered amongst our DVD collection, a film called "Black and White" which is actually the story based on the 1959 trail of Rupert Max Stuart, which made me wonder if there were any more stories/biographies which have been made into film too ?

Thanks :0)

The Old Adelaide Gaol, Our Grand Old Lady has so much history I cringe at the fact that the goverment has not made this part of our childrens education. We are lucky to have our Gaol (Jail) standing proud even though we were the worst prison in Australia.Take the ghosts out of the subject and you could never get tired of hearing so much about the history contained in the Grand Lady.
We have a number of books worth buying and yes Dead Woman Walking is in my home but I will not read it here it is saved for Mondays when I am at the Gaol .Being at the Gaol reading Elizabeths life story is just a amazing way to read a book being in the same place as she was and still is RIP ELIZABETH .
Sorry but I love the Gaol and everytime I am there I walk out with something new about her.
OOhh yes the Black and White movie we have had movies made at the Gaol but not on the Gaol it self .There have been docos and one on Elizabeth done by students.

Anna .. you are so lucky to be doing something you love. It sounds amazing ! I can just imagine how that must feel - reading Elizabeth's story while actually being there.
It leads me to ask ... have you had any sort of strange experiences while you were reading her story there ?

A good history book to read about the Gaol, is Inside - A brief History of the Adelaide Gaol by Sue Scheiffers which is sold in the shop there.  That is probably one of the better ones.

The Gaol is a huge part of South Australia's history and yet a large number of Adelaidians don't even know it exists or where it is which I find sad.  After all, this is one of our oldest buildings and one that nearly bankrupted the State in it's days when built.

Take the 'ghosts' away from the equation, this building is still incredibly interesting from a history point of view.  The fact that 45 people were executed there and still remain there is just an addition to that history.

Thanks Alison ... yes I'm ashamed to say that I don't know a whole lot about Adelaide's historic sites. Well, I know where they are, but not much about their history. I will certainly keep that book in mind that you have mentioned.
I have been having a bit of a look around the net, and I think the book by TJ Porter - Fly with the Eagles is the story about Glen Valance ? It was transcribed from letters Glen had written while in Adelaide Gaol from what I've read.
(Although the internet can be a wealth of information, I still like to just kick back and read a good book)
I will get down and do a tour of the Gaol one day soon. It has been in the back of my mind, but I always get side-tracked. I actually made the effort and got myself to the Zoo on Christmas Day just passed. Hadn't been there for about 15 or more years I would say. I had a fantastic day, and the Zoo is absolutely beautiful. So lush and green now - a real transformation. It was sad not to see an elephant or polar bear or brown bear, like I remembered, but I got a glimpse of the pandas behind the glass. Will definately be going again before another 15 years passes, as I didn't get to see everything.

Ah yes TJ Porter who wrote the book is still a volunteer at the Gaol.  He has a wealth of history knowledge and wrote several small books.  One of my favourites was the Hempen Collar, but not sure if that one is still in print or not.

The pandas... you actually managed to fight your way through the crowds to see them????  I was going to wait for the excitement to die down before I dared wander down there lol.

Thanks for that info on TJ Porter and the books Alison - I'll be on a mssion now until I get them and read them ...lol
Sounds like TJ Porter could pen an interesting biography himself !

Funnily enough, the panda viewing went pretty smoothly. I had made plans to go to the Zoo for Christmas Day regardless (Had the same thoughts as you - would go back in the New Year when all the fuss died down and they were out of quarantine), so I hadn't booked a viewing like you were supposed too.
A group of us went, and when I went to fix the tickets up, the girl at the booth said "Would you like to see the pandas ?" Well, we were there, so why not ?
Their enclosure and surroundings is absolutely beautiful - I won't spoil it for you, but it includes "The Jewels of Asia", and "The Bamboo Forest" - impressive.
I'll try not to make this post too long because it's a bit off the topic of the Adelaide Gaol, but I must tell you this story.
When we got to the quarantine area where the pandas were, we were instructed to keep the line moving - keep filing past the glass, and then pool into an area, where we could take photos - the line would be stopped for a short time to allow us to do this.
Anyway, people did not keep moving - they stopped in front of the glass, and some people actually let their small kids climb onto the ledge and they were standing there and pressing their faces against the glass.
I could see Funi, who was in the first enclosure, pretty well, but because we had stopped, I glanced over to look at Wang Wang too. Both were pretty content. Funi was sitting eating bamboo, the she got up and walked away from the glass. Wang Wang however, seemed a little more relaxed. He was reclining on a rock and munching away, when all of a sudden he looked like he was going to get up and do the same as Funi.
He got up all right ! He then proceeded to back up to the glass, and in front of all the people who has stopped the line, he had a number two - almost blatant - a message perhaps ?
I couldn't stop laughing, as I thought of the "lovely" view they must have been having ...lol
I didn't manage to get any photos of them as we didn't stop to "pool". We had to keep moving as we had a 6 month old baby with us who was ready for a bottle. I think my daughter said she managed to take a few snaps while we were stopped in the line, but they weren't very good because of the glare from the glass. And as for me ? - I took our video camera, and didn't check the battery beforehand, did I ? I think I managed about 2 minutes of footage before it died - and that was before we reached the pandas anyway.

lol... I remember the chimps doing something similar.  One climbed down came over the the crowd that was oohing and aaahing at them.... squatted down and did a number 2 in his hand then proceeded to eat it!!  You have never seen parents hurry their kids away as quickly as they did that day lmao.  I just killed myself laughing... I suspect the chimp did too!!

And now back on to the Gaol......

I did a recent tour there last year with Adelaide Hills X Group, for a while between 2001-2004 i used to call adelaide gaol my second home because I loved going there with PRISM whom I was a member.

I once in a blue moon will either sense or feel spirits or ghosts.  Now the recent sensation happened on the last tour of the Gaol, i was good walking around at night into each area, its just when I got to the hanging tower with the group, I felt like I had to sit down, and I just felt like a sorrow feeling coming over me and felt uncomfortable for a while, i felt sorry as the guy was talking about how the trapdoor worked.  Then when we exited the hanging tower I was fine.

On Saturday just gone I went ghost hunting with my primary school mate and my hubby, we drove along the dirt road next to the gaol.  The boys felt something half way down and half way back.  It sucks only men can sense that area and not women.
