This is a story of our sleep over at the Adelaide gaol for my son Dayton's 13th.We began at 5.00pm there
were twenty one of us there six being adults. At 7.00pm we headed for our tour, we had one lad actually feel
really faint and sick when we entered the hanging tower. This seems to happen
to a few people; is it paranormal or is it just one' s
mind? It is a small building and very claustrophobic. The hanging tower
came into use in 1950 ,and only four people were hanged there, the last
being Glen Sabre Valance for the murder of his employer and the rape of
his employers wife .Valance had actually written a book on his life
which was lost for years it is now actually out on sale. Valance has
been described as a man with no soul and with the act of his crimes you
can understand that description. We were then taken down the pathway to
where the portable gallows were. This is where the only woman was
hanged. Elizabeth Lillian Woolcock, she was accused of the murder of
her husband with mercury poison and was hanged on the 30th December.
Her story is one on its own .Her husband was ill and he was treated by
three doctors and was in fact given mercury by the doctors. As you walk
along the pathway the walls have the initials of the people hanged over
their burials. You were placed just outside the area you were hanged.
When you reach Elizabeth's grave, flowers have been placed at the site
as we have a lot of people who believe she should never have been
hanged and also believe she was not guilty of his death. Now we walk
into the new building, this is the only proper building that housed a
lot of prisoners as there is the remand center which is only one
hallway with top and bottom floor but has no other buildings connected
to it like the new building. In 1879 the new building was built with 92
cells and housed 100 prisoners . The building itself is a bit
claustrophobic as I said it is the only building with so many cells
indoors so you are entering a different atmosphere from your first
entry. From 1894 to 1950 men were hanged in the new building, permanent
gallows were built there and 21 men were hanged in this area. The cells
were cleared the previous night of all prisoners as the gallows are at
the entrance of the cells, the prisoner is watched until his hanging 24
hours a day in case he try's suicide, his cell has a mesh screen so he
can be seen. Also at the gallows end are two double doors these are
called the fridge doors as they have fridge door handles, prisoners who
had episodes due to drugs or mental conditions were placed into these
cells so they could make as much noise they wanted and not disturb the
other prisoners, their markings are still on the doors. Our tour ended
and we headed back to the dormitory to watch a video and listen to a
evp .As we were about to listen to the evp we had a gentleman who was
also there with his wife for his birthday which funnily enough is on
the same day as my sons, shout out " who turned the fan on." There was
a fan in the room its a large one on a stand it was switched on at the
wall but to turn it on you had to flick the switch. Well I can tell you
there were a few skeptics with no way of explaining that one and I
myself was over the moon to get a strange paranormal happening. We
had a few more strange happenings on our sleepless sleepover. When the
boys had arrived they had picked the second room to sleep in but all of
a sudden they came running out saying that two of the boys saw an orb
and wanted me to go take pictures .So off I went with the boys right
behind and grabbing their gear as soon as they could and moving to the
front end where we were and kitchen was. At least a few of them
admitted they were scared. I was being warden walking up and down
telling kids to be quiet and as I looked to the door where the boys
first were there was like a thing moving across the door then it opened
and slammed there was no wind nothing . Hubby had taken the plunge and
decided he would sleep in that and was woken by the bang.. Now the
weirdest thing of the night was the boys had their mobiles and were
phoning each other, the boy that was the most frightened had his phone
rung by another boy he told him to hang up as his phone was ringing and
he couldn't answer it, When the other boy told him he had hung up they
came running up to the kitchen tome and
gave me his phone I was pressing all the buttons and couldn't get this phone to
stop ringing and the phone itself just had the phone network on it, we had to
actually turn the phone off to stop it.
Sadly
my daughter Shelton missed having her sleep over there as sleep overs
were stopped.Well this is our story of the AdelaideGaol sleepless
sleepover there are so many stories this grand building has and many
more to come I am sure. If you do get to Adelaide please make your way
to a very exiting beautiful building with so many stories, history and
ghosts.
